The mediator does not offer solutions, but helps the parties change their interaction – from negative to positive, from destructive to constructive. The mediator can also help the parties’ see the other person’s position in a dispute, which many times leads to a more productive conversation and negotiation between the parties.
Mediation differs from other dispute resolution processes, such as arbitration and litigation, in that the parties themselves make their own decisions and craft their own agreement.
